May 2017

Assessment Time is here! The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) will be administered to our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students starting May 9th. This test reflects our Common Core State Standards and what our students have been learning all year. We all—teachers, instructional assistants, specialists, support staff, classified staff, and administrators—assess all the time. Whether it be formative assessment to check on how things are going throughout the year or a summative assessment, looking at progress over time, we use this information to plan, implement, and improve our work. The SBAC is but one assessment your students will have; and while it is important, understand that it is a snapshot in time that will provide us data. Along with the other multiple measures we use to monitor your child’s progress, all of this information and evidence will help us to better meet your child’s specific learning needs. Our teachers are knowledgeable, our students are well prepared, and we look forward to seeing how they perform in this arena. As always, it is critical that your child be at school on time their day of testing. We can, of course, do test make-ups if they are ill or there is a family emergency, but in advance, thank you for prioritizing the dates  in the Polecat Planner and for not scheduling any doctor’s appointments or trips at these times. Finally, while we are doing our best to instruct and support our students, as always, home is the foundation. Your role as parents is key in preparing your children for a successful school experience, including this assessment time. We ask that you help your children by doing the following in preparation for their specific testing days: · Talk with them about their upcoming assessments

and validate that they are capable. · If your children have any questions or concerns that you feel we need to know about, please contact your child’s teachers so we can be responsive. · Ensure that your children get to bed early and get a good night’s sleep. · Ensure that your children have a healthy breakfast with nutritious food that will sustain them. · Check in with your children after school on testing days. Ask how things went, give them a high-five or hug for their efforts, and enjoy some quality time together.

Thank you for your attention, support, and involvement. We have great students at Carrisa Plains who come from great parents/guardians! We are all doing our best each day and that is all we can ask from our students, ourselves, and from you.

April 2017

Though we will be sad to see Mrs. Twisselman leave, we wish her the best in her future adventures! Mrs. T is an important part of our school and our Carrisa family.  YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED!!!

A Letter From Mrs. Twisselman --

As we close in on the end of another great school year, I wanted to take the time to let you all know that I will be taking a leave of absence next year to spend time with my daughter. It was a bittersweet decision as I will miss my students and the many wonderful people in and around Carrisa Plains Elementary. Over the last 3 years, I have learned so much and I have so enjoyed watching and helping these children grow, learn, and blossom into the respectful, dedicated, and talented students they have become. I know they will do well in their future endeavors, and I know they will continue to work hard and persevere to overcome any and all obstacles they may face. Thank

you for helping to make these last 3 years memorable for me, and for all of your support and teamwork as we worked together to give your children the best education possible. Let's continue to do our best and help our students finish the year on a strong note. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as we are wrapping up the year.

Thanks,

Mrs. Twisselman

March 2017

Our students are so fortunate to have the opportunities they have. Because of the hard work of every single staff member at Carrisa Plains, our students receive a laser-focused academic education, enhanced by the hard work of our staff. They ensure that our students are exposed to additional learning that helps them make real-life connections to the information they are learning. From guest speakers, and fieldtrips to music and art, our students are growing as individuals cognitively, socially, and emotionally. Our students are models for kindness and caring. They work very hard to ensure they are making strong choices, but kindly help others make positive choices as well. Thank you to all of our parents, as well, for all of your work at home as you reinforce the work we are doing at Carrisa Plains. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. It is so wonderful to see the close and consistent collaboration between home and school, and school and home. As we say here at Carrisa, “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work.”  GO POLECATS!
